Change Lingerie on Queen West

Change_lingerie_toronto_queenNot a lot of people in Toronto know about Change lingerie on Queen West.  I’ll admit this was my first time visiting the store. I’m glad I dropped by as I had a chance to chat with their store manager, Denise Rkulovic. A few facts Denise wants you to know about Change:

Change focuses solely and mostly on the right fit. The fact that the fashions are beautiful and from Europe is an added bonus. We carry a whole size range from 28 to 44, A to J cup. Our main goal is to assure that every pair of breasts is supported properly according to health guides. The right fit can eliminate back pain and discomfort associated with wearing smaller wires that hit at the wrong spot.  We want women to come in and get fitted properly and we will not sell you a size that is not right for you.

I noticed some pretty amazing deals:

  • Bras from $7.99
  • Panties 5 / $25
  • Socks $9.99

So next time you’re looking for the right size at the right price, make sure you visit Change!

Style Photoshoot by B&N Photography

Anastassia and Boyan are a couple of independent photographers operating out of Toronto. I’ve had a distinct honour of being a model in a few of their photoshoots. I’m happy how those sessions turned out but what impresses me the most are my friends’ engagement photos.  Simply stunning, I’ve never seen anything like that before!

I’ve been wanting to introduce them to you since, well, I started blogging. So I figured there would be no better way than to ask Anastassia to pose in her favourite outfits. You’ll get to admire the beautiful photographs they took, and also get some style tips as a bonus :)

10 Reasons to Throw UGGs Out

1. They are not Canadian weather proof.

Yuck!

1960s, UGG boots became a popular option for competitive surfers, who used the boots to keep their feet warm after exiting from the surf. It’s nice to see we have so many surfers in Toronto.

Not that we really need 9 more reasons, but for those still not convinced, I’ll keep going :)

2. You think they’re comfortable? I bet  they are, but they provide zero foot support and are the worst choice for long distance walking. You know what else is comfortable? My bathrobe, my slippers, my PJs, my… well, you get my point :)

Also, men don‘t find hoof-like feet attractive.
If you’re a man and are reading this, please comment and prove me right.

*

3. Everybody has them, and you want a unique style, right?
That’s why you’re here :)

*

So here are some alternatives to Uggs, all available in Toronto:

*

4. Mouton Shearling $199
how cute are these!?

5. Pajar $149

6. Airstep $299
I love these, they are my favourite. I might wait for them to go on sale, but I’m definitely getting them this year.

7. Timberland $179

9. Otmet $169
These are super-cute, too.

10. Wool socks $49, wear them with your favourite leather boots

And this is where they told me I’m not allowed to take any photos in the store. Luckily I got enough material by then. I find that rule to be ridiculous, I’m actually doing them a favour here. I guess not everyone is as friendly as the Holt Renfrew folks.

These photos were taken at Get Outside on Queen and Spadina.

Bedo on Queen West

Whenever I’m looking for a new winter coat or a dress, my first stop is always Bedo. This Canadian store carries unique pieces that compliment my urban lifestyle. Since they only have two locations in downtown Toronto, I know I won’t ever bump into someone wearing the same thing as me. You’ll find me rummaging through the racks at their Queen West location at least once a week.

  • when dressing up, think embellishments and sequins
  • pair up tunic-style dresses with boyfriend blazers
  • mix different textures and colours (leather, metallic…)

One Day at The Ten Spot Spa

The_Ten_Spot_Spa_TorontoThe Ten Spot spa has just opened up their second location in Leslieville. I had just finished my exams so I really needed a day at a spa :) I scheduled a facial and manicure with Erica.

Here’s my breakdown of the whole visit:

Location: easy to find. The 501 streetcar dropped me off only a few meters away from the spa at Queen St. E and Greenwood Ave.

Upon arrival:  Erica was ready for my appointment right away – great since I hate waiting on my appointments. As a bonus, I got a complimentary refreshment to start my visit.

Staff: well groomed and pleasant. Erica was very knowledgeable, she explained my facial treatment details in impressive depth. She also inquired about any special requirements or concerns I might have had. I felt I was in hands of a genuine expert throughout the treatment.

Atmosphere: relaxed, comfortable

Amenities: outstanding  hygiene! One remark: I couldn’t find a hook in the bathroom. I didn’t know what to do with my clothes while I was changing.

Facial: I was worried about having a bad reaction to products and walking out with red sports on my face. It was quite the opposite – my skin looked much better than when I walked in.

The_Ten_Spot_Spa_facial

my facial treatment

Some of the facial facts Erica mentioned during my treatment:

  1. Ideally, facial treatments should be done every 4-6 weeks. If you can’t stick to that routine, then you should book an appointment at least with every season’s change.
  2. Watch what you eat – it has an impact on your skin and you have full control over it
  3. Men also get facials and sometimes they are more particular than women! All the single ladies out there, don’t settle for a man who doesn’t take care of his skin.
  4. Before your facial treatment: no waxing. If you have severe acne or sunburn, they won’t be able to treat you.
  5. After your facial treatment: minimal makeup during the next 24hrs, wear sunblock, don’t use exfoliants, no waxing, and no tanning.
  6. Sunblock vs. Sunscreen: Sunscreen absorbs in your skin and breaks down collagen and elastin. Contains cancer-causing agents. Sunblock sits on top of your skin, it contains less chemicals and 15-30spf should be an adequate protection.

Erica recommended the following Dermalogica products for my skin type:

  • MediBac Clearing Skin Wash $42.00
  • Daily Microfoliant $49.75
  • Multi-active toner $43.00
  • ChromaWhite C12 Concentrate $117.80

I was given this customized skin treatment chart to take home. Nice!

Manicure: I chose  OPI Black Onyx colour for my nails. Erica was fast and got it done in under 30 minutes. I do my nails several times a week so I was happy to see that they looked even better after Erica worked her magic on them. Erica used a SpaRitual vegan base coat which contains less chemicals and protects my nails better than a regular base coat. I decided to buy it :)

Other services:

They offer affordable waxing and tint services

…or you could get a pedicure

Summary: I had a great relaxing day. I liked how I looked. Now I’m looking forward to scheduling my next appointment (which I can do online)!

Fluevog Funky Shoes With Style

Believe it or not, this was my first time at John Fluevog.

I used to walk by that Queen Street window twice a day
and I don’t really know why I never walked in…

To sum it up, they sell funky shoes with style.

Their staff are friendly and fun to talk to – one of them even tried on a pair of shoes for me!

I’m sharing with you some of my favourite styles.

I wasn’t too crazy about their ladies collection – a bit too theatrical for my taste.
But they had some of the best men’s shoes I’ve ever seen!
I don’t think these photos do justice to the quality of the leather.
I guess you just have to go see (& touch) it to believe it!

Holt Renfrew Pop-up and Items Under $100

Vroooooom! The Holt Renfew truck has arrived at 560 King St West and it’s full of goodies under $100! I was just there this morning and I can’t wait to share the rest of my story with you.

Is it a gallery, is it a store? – people are wondering as they walk by Holt‘s pop-up shop. Certainly looks inviting, so come on in!

As I was walking around admiring the store and lusting over some designer handbags, I was pleased to see that Holt‘s pop-up shop is also offering many affordable items.

Holt’s own Barbara Atkin (VP, Fashion Direction) and Jackie Charest (Director, Cosmetics & Beauty Services Marketing) were happy to guide me through the shop and help me search for this season’s must-haves under $200. Dear readers, it’s your lucky day!

Barbara’s helping Jackie put on a black sequin hat. It is reversible and also comes in silver. Keep fashionably warm this winter for only $75.

These are some of Jackie’s favourites.

At the top we have the Butter London 3Free nailpolish collection and this season’s must-have colours. At $17 each, these are worth every penny as they have no formaldehyde, toluene and DBP (a.k.a. bad, bad, evil chemicals).

Jackie is holding a Feu de Bois (Firewood) candle by Diptyque, $72. It smells just wonderful, think of cottages and burning wood. All you need is a latte, a warm sweater and a good book :)

Lots of exciting items here! Barbara is showing us a $15 Kiehl’s bag (not a typo, $15 really).

Jackie is wearing a $50 suede scarf that also comes in several other colours. She also showed me these lovely beaded scarves on the right. They come in many colours and look best when layered-up. $28!

These magazine bags are definitely chic! Jackie pointed out that they are a great holiday gift, and oh-so-affordable. Get them for $40 each, or go for the $25 mini, or both :)

As she is explaining the whole unisex theme at Holt’s popup, Barbara is showing me some of the best-selling items, purchased by both men and women.

On the left we have a $195 Minedrd sequin top. Note that the sequins are matte – just enough reflection for a polished look, you don’t have to worry about loking like a disco-ball :)

Pair it up with this soooooft cashmere sweater, yours for only $198. You definitely want to get these for your boyfriend and steal them from time to time.

This MIA suede bag is only $98!
Barbara, you might want to keep it, it goes so well with your outfit.

These Hunter boots don’t need an introduction. Dear friends, I wouldn’t mind seeing a pair under my Christmas tree :)

Barbara and Jackie, thank you sooooo much for chatting with me and showing me this season’s must haves! It’s exciting to see that they’re also talking about Holt’s pop-up in this Vogue article, thank you for being a one-stop fashion-shop for us Torontonians.

Holt’s pop-up shop at 560 King St West is open until December 6th. The doors close at 9 tonight. They’re open on Friday 12-8, Saturday 11-7 and Sunday 12-6.

So don’t be shy, drop by, say hello, treat yourself to a nice Holt Renfrew bag :)
